Genetic Counselling
Preconception Genetic Counselling
Planning a pregnancy is an exciting time, and genetic counselling can help you prepare by exploring any potential risks for inherited conditions. These sessions are valuable for anyone considering pregnancy; especially if there’s a known condition in your family, if you and your partner come from the same ancestral or population group (where certain genetic conditions may be more common), or if you’re part of a higher-risk population group.
It can be particularly helpful if you’re considering assisted reproductive options such as IVF or donor sperm/eggs. Together, we’ll review your personal and family history, discuss carrier screening options, and talk through your reproductive choices. The goal is to ensure you feel informed, supported, and empowered as you plan for your future family.
Prenatal Genetic Counselling
Prenatal genetic counselling provides support and information during pregnancy, particularly if you’re 35 or older, have had abnormal screening results, or there are concerns about a family history of genetic conditions.
If you want to understand the risks to your fetus, we can discuss available testing options such as non-invasive prenatal testing (NIPT), diagnostic tests like chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis, and relevant carrier screening.
This session is designed to help you make informed decisions by explaining what each test can and cannot tell you, the timing, and the potential outcomes; all in a clear, compassionate, and non-pressured environment.
Cancer Genetic Counselling
A personal or family history of cancer, particularly but not limited to breast, ovarian, prostate or colon cancer, may indicate an inherited cancer risk.
I can help assess your risk based on your personal and family history, discuss appropriate genetic tests such as BRCA or Lynch syndrome testing, and support you in understanding what your results mean for your medical management, treatment and/or family planning.
Paediatric & Adult Genetic Counselling
Genetic counselling can support individuals of any age when a treating healthcare provider suspects a genetic condition.
If your child has features or symptoms that may be due to a genetic condition, I can guide you through genetic test results, and assist in understanding what they may mean for your child and family.
For adults, genetic counselling may be appropriate if you have a personal or family history suggestive of a genetic condition; such as certain neurological or cardiac disorders.
These sessions help clarify the next steps, ensure you’re supported throughout the testing process, and give you and your family the tools to make informed decisions about ongoing care and risk to relatives.
General Health & Lifestyle Genetic Counselling
If you’ve had lifestyle or ancestry genetic testing done and feel unsure about the results, this session is designed to help you understand what they really mean. We’ll go beyond the marketing to interpret your results in a healthcare context, highlight what is clinically relevant, and clarify what may be more recreational or medically uncertain.
This can be especially helpful if your results mention health risks, carrier status, or other findings that might impact your medical care or family planning. You’ll get balanced, evidence-based guidance tailored to your personal and family history, empowering you to make informed choices about your health.
