What is genetic counselling?
Genetic counselling is a conversation-based healthcare service that helps you understand how genetics may affect your health or the health of your family. It includes discussing personal and family medical history, explaining genetic testing options, and supporting you in making informed decisions about your care.
Do I need a referral from a doctor?
No, you can book an appointment directly.
However, it can be important to have a doctor involved in your clinical management, especially if genetic testing is recommended, so that results can be integrated into your ongoing healthcare.
What happens during the first appointment?
Your first appointment focuses on understanding your personal and family history, exploring your questions and concerns, and discussing whether genetic testing might be helpful. You’ll also learn about what the testing process involves, possible outcomes, and how results may affect you or your family.
How long are appointments?
- First appointments: ±60 minutes
- Follow-up appointments: ±30–45 minutes
If more time is needed, we’ll make sure you have the space to address your concerns.
How much does it cost?
You’ll find detailed pricing on the Pricing page. Fees are charged per appointment and do not include the cost of genetic testing, which is billed separately by the laboratory.
Payment for the appointment can be made via EFT (bank details will be provided in your booking confirmation email) or other listed methods.
Is genetic testing always necessary?
No. Many people find value in genetic counselling without undergoing genetic testing. Sometimes the discussion itself provides the clarity you need. Testing is recommended only when it’s likely to provide useful medical information for you or your family. I am not affiliated with any laboratory, so any decision about genetic testing is your choice and based on what’s best for your clinical care.
Is everything I share confidential?
Yes. All information you share is kept strictly confidential in line with South African privacy and health data regulations. Information will only be shared with your referring doctor or healthcare team if you consent.
Do you offer virtual appointments?
Yes, all consultations are held online via a secure video platform. This means you can access genetic counselling from anywhere in South Africa without the need to travel.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you need to reschedule or cancel, please provide at least 24 hours notice to avoid being charged a late cancellation fee. This ensures appointment slots can be offered to other clients who may be waiting.
If you have a question that isn’t listed here, please feel free to get in touch! I’m happy to help!
